Moving to Portugal: Which visa choose?
Written by Sílvia Biscaia
Portugal is one of Europe’s most attractive destinations for those looking to invest, retire or work remotely. But choosing the right visa is essential for a smooth and legal relocation.
Here’s a practical overview of the most relevant residence visas for non-EU citizens — and what you should know before applying.
D7 Visa — For Passive Income Holders
The D7 Visa is ideal for those with stable income from abroad (pensions, rentals, dividends) who wish to live in Portugal for a long-term period.
The requirements to apply for this Visa include:
- Monthly income of at least €870 (for the main applicant; other values are added for other members of the family, 50% for spouse and 30% per child)
- Hold a Portuguese bank account and address
- Submit the Visa application in the country of residence
This visa leads to a residence permit, renewable every two years, and is eligible for permanent residency after 5 years.
Digital Nomad Visa — For Remote Workers
Introduced in 2022, the Digital Nomad Visa is designed for individuals working remotely for foreign companies.
Key criteria:
- Monthly income ≥ €3,280
- Proof of employment or freelance work
- Valid health insurance and accommodation in Portugal
- It grants a 1-year stay, renewable, with access to public services.
Golden Visa — Now Fund-Only
As of 2023, real estate investment no longer qualifies for the Golden Visa in Portugal.
Current eligible options include:
- Investment in approved venture capital funds.
- Donations to research or cultural projects
- Job creation or company setup
This route still provides residence rights and free travel in the Schengen Area but each situation needs to be carefully evaluated.
Startup & Entrepreneur Visas
Portugal supports innovation through specific visa programs for entrepreneurs and business creators.
To qualify, the applicants must:
- Show a viable business plan
- Prove sufficient financial means
- Register their activity and pay social contributions
Temporary vs. Residence Visas:
- Temporary Stay Visa: For stays up to 12 months (not renewable)
- Residence Visa: For long-term relocation, allows renewal and permanent residency
Choosing the right type depends on the intentions of the applicant, income source and relocation desired timeline.
Key Documents required for all Visas:
- Valid passport
- NIF (Portuguese tax number)
- Proof of income / employment
- Accommodation in Portugal
- Health insurance
- Criminal record certificate
